Davenport

December 28, 2014

I’ve heard about Davenport and the old port and I’ve seen pictures. I was looking for some cool places to visit along the coast, and this was one of them. It was closer than a few of the other places so I asked Wong and Cherish if they wanted to go. They were all for it, so we headed south for a bit of an adventure. Davenport is about 30 minutes south of Half Moon Bay, and once we got there, there wasn’t a lot there. There was one little area with a couple of restaurants right off the road, but we were more excited about the view to come.

We were trying to figure out a way down, which I knew was possible because of the pictures. I read that most people climbed down a fairly steep incline, but Wong is deathly afraid of heights, so we tried to find an easier route down.

There was an easier climb down to the beach further south, but the waves were crashing into the cliff face, preventing us from walking all the way around. It seemed as though we just wouldn’t be able to go down there.

We were pretty bummed because it felt like a waste driving all the way down there for nothing. But suddenly, we saw two guys walking up the steep cliff face as if it were nothing. They were down by the old pier, so I checked out the trail where they came from. Looking down made it seem a lot steeper than it was, but climbing down actually wasn’t too bad. Of course, it’s easy for me to say. I’m not afraid of heights. Once Cherish and Wong saw that I was down and safe, Cherish decided to join the fun.

Wong had no choice but to temporarily overcome his fear of heights, and make the trek down. There was one sketchy part where you almost have to jump down, and that’s where Wong got stuck for a good 15 minutes. He eventually made it down and we were all really proud of him. The hike up was easier for him because I volunteered to carry his camera bag.
