The Rock
December 11, 2011

Randomly, after Christmas Day, my brother said, “I have never been to Alcatraz before.” Or was it my sister-in-law that said that? I can’t remember. In any case, I had been there several times throughout my life, but it just gave me another opportunity to photograph my favorite subjects: my nieces and nephew. At the time, my cousin was working for the ship company that transported people to and from Alcatraz, so he gave us a free ride. It was freezing early in the morning, but it ended up being a nice day out on The Rock.

The day before, we had lunch at Crab House at Pier 39. I had never been there, but was excited to try it out. It was one of those restuarants where they serve you seafood on a giant platter, and you just go to town on the food. My hands got a little too messy for me to take a photo, but trust me; it was delicious.

We had to meet my cousin early in the morning the next day to ensure we got a pass to get on the boat. Once we arrived, it was just more of the same from previous visits. Alcatraz is Alcatraz, though, and the fact that it’s filled with so much history still makes it a special part of San Francisco.
