US Navy Blue Angels

October 12, 2014

Fleet Week has always been one of my favorite events in San Francisco. Being able to watch the Blue Angels fly around over the city has always been fun. This was the first time I got to watch from Treasure Island, and it was a really good vantage point for us to photograph.

The challenging part for me about shooting non-human subjects like airplanes and vehicles is trying to capture an emotion. Composition has to be a big part of conveying movement and emotion. I also had to rely on the smoke trails from the jets to show movement and action. When there aren’t enough clouds in the sky to effectively pan a photo, the second best option is to show the smoke trails. It’s almost as important as the jets themselves.
